Anriette Schoeman (Nashua Telecoms) was victorious in the popular sixth leg of the Beachfront Lodges Series in Port Elizabeth at the weekend. The ladies started the 82km Butterfield circuit with the elite men and Schoeman launched her break away from the ladies when she attacked against a steep drag 17.2 km into the race on the 2nd lap. She was caught by the chasing bunch 3km later. The bunch had broken into two groups with Andrea von Holt (Cyclo Pro) and Lindi Erasmus (Cyclelab) in the 2nd bunch. They managed to work their way back to the leading bunch 33km into the race on lap 3. Unfortunately for them a serious attack was launched by the men against the Butterfield drag just as they were rejoining the bunch. The bunch again broke up into two groups with Erasmus and Von Holt left behind in the 2nd bunch. At 37km into the race Schoeman had a 20sec time gap on them. Numerous attacks were launched by Cycle Lab, NMMU, Cyclo Pro, Friendly City and Volkswagen trying to get their riders away. Again Erasmus and Von Holt succeeded in working their way back to Schoeman in the leading bunch with 42km to go. The riders of NMMU and Friendly City launched a huge attack 50km into the race on the Butterfield drag breaking the bunch into two again. Schoeman managed to hang on while Erasmus and Von Holt were left behind. Conrad Viljoen (NMMU), Mario Nel (Friendly City) and Antal Meiswinkel (Cyclelab) made their move 54km into the race leaving the main bunch behind. Viljoen managed to out sprint Mario Nel for the 1st place in 02:05:25 with Antal Meiswinkel taking 3rd. Schoeman managed to stay away to take 1st place in 02:06:20 with Erasmus 2nd in 02:11:40 and Von Holt 3rd in 02:11:41. |
